A Dragon Flies Into a Bar

A4b. Iomandra's Arrival

This scene takes place in the The Sleeping Tower

As the players return:

  • Flax and Gundren are with the party.

  • Iomandra is flying to the tower to visit Flax.

As the players return to the tower, if Flax didn’t unlock his breath weapon, he nervously asks the players not to tell Iomandra about losing his hoard. (“It’s back now,” he says, giggling anxiously, “so that means everything is okay, and she doesn’t need to worry about it, right?”)

At or around noon, Iomandra arrives overhead the Sleeping Tower and scans the surrounding area for Flax. If the players can see her, read or paraphrase:

A shadow crosses the noonday sun—a winged, reptilian form, a long, serpentine tail snaking behind it as it flies.

If Iomandra sees Flax, she descends directly to him. Otherwise, she descends to the Sleeping Tower to seek him there.

When Iomandra descends, if the players can see her, read or paraphrase:

As the reptilian shape descends, its true size becomes apparent—easily twenty feet in length from snout to tail, with great, batlike wings covering a wingspan of nearly thirty feet. Silver scales sparkle an iridescent silver, and a tall, shimmering frill stands proudly atop its head.

The ground thumps noticeably beneath the dragon’s weight as she lands, clawed hands the size of a man’s torso curling heavily into the earth below. Bright, silver-blue eyes look down from a height of thirteen feet, above powerful shoulders broader than a wagon.

Iomandra first greets Flax delightedly upon descending, and greets the players cordially if present. (“Can you introduce us, Flax?” she asks, nodding toward them.)

If Flax successfully unlocked his breath weapon and recovered his hoard

  • Flax is exuberant to see Iomandra, his body wriggling with barely contained excitement.

  • Immediately after their necks entwine in greeting, Flax pulls back and babbles, “Iomandra! Iomandra! Want to see what I can do? Want to see it?”

  • If allowed, Flax takes to the air, flaps a few times, then blasts his cold breath triumphantly into the air.

If Iomandra sees Flax’s breath weapon

  • Iomandra is overjoyed and vocally impressed, nuzzling his head with her own in congratulations.

  • If asked, or if the time is right, Iomandra admits that she was wrong about letting Flax live on his own. “It looks like it’s helped you grow up more than I could have imagined,” she says, teary-eyed. “I’m so proud of you, Flax.”

If the players reduced Flax’s Anxiety Die,

  • Flax proudly calls them his “friends” and is quick to credit them for helping him learn how to be “a real dragon.”

  • A fascinated Iomandra regards the players with intrigue, insists that Flax and the players tell her the full story, and thanks the players for helping Flax with deep appreciation.

  • If she has the opportunity, Iomandra privately thanks the players for their friendship with Flax, sharing that he has always seemed to struggle in ways that she could never seem to help, and—bowing her head before them—that she is incredibly grateful for their efforts to encourage and support him.

  • To reward the players for their support, Iomandra plucks one of the scales from her chest, closes her eyes, and touches it with her snout, enchanting it to be a Dragoncaller's Scale. She then bestows this scale upon the players, explains its properties, and assures them that they can use it to call her “should a time of great need arise.” (If called by the Dragoncaller's Scale, Iomandra can travel to the players’ location at a speed of ten miles per hour.)

  • Iomandra also invites the players to visit her on Icespire Peak, should they ever desire to brave the icy bluffs of the Sword Mountains. (“I’m told it’s not the most comfortable journey for non-dragons,” she says, her eyes twinkling. “But know that you shall always be welcome guests in my home.”)

When Iomandra is satisfied

  • Iomandra departs into the sky, her silhouette fading into the distance.

  • When Iomandra is gone, Flax emphatically thanks them for their help and exclaims that he would love to join them on further adventures. (“Um. I mean,” he says, “only if you’d want to have me.”)

You did it. Flax has been reunited with his sister, and Gundren has found himself a brand new capable party for whatever adventures come next. Thanks for running this one. We hope your table had a blast.
